We are now entering fall, my favorite time of year. I don’t love fall because of the leaves changing and the pumpkin-flavored treats. No, I love fall because it means the beginning of a new season for all my favorite TV shows. Since fan favorites like Parks and Recreation and How I Met Your Mother are finally back for new episodes, let’s take a moment to listen to some wise advice from their actors. Here are 25 career lessons from this fall’s hottest TV stars:
1. “Taking risks and making choices is what makes life so exciting.” – Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation.

2. ”Thankfully I’ve been quite lucky in my career, but it’s always good to re-evaluate things and think about what else you want to do.” – Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother

3. “Your life is your story, and the adventure ahead of you is the journey to fulfill your own purpose and potential.” – Kerry Washington, Scandal
4. ”I’ve seen a lot of people have success handed to them that then exploited it. They didn’t protect it or cherish it.” – Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
5. ”Be truthful, say what you mean, and mean what you say. Don’t ignore the given circumstances.” – Lauren Graham, Parenthood
6. ”I’m not afraid to take chances or go off on my own.” – Norman Reedus, The Walking Dead
7. “Hard work pays off. I am so annoyed at my father for being right about that.” – Lena Dunham, Girls
8. “I feel that I very often watch a lot of young people sort of meander around without any idea about why they’re doing what they’re doing. I mean to want and to be ambitious and to want to be successful, is not enough. That’s just desire. To know what you want, to understand why you’re doing it, to dedicate every breath in your body to achieve. If you feel you have something to give, if you feel that your particular talent is worth developing, is worth caring for then there’s nothing you can’t achieve.” – Kevin Spacey, House of Cards
9. “Acceptance and tolerance and forgiveness, those are life-altering lessons.” – Jessica Lange, American Horror Story
10. “With stand-up, it’s more interesting to hear about people’s failures than their successes.” – Aziz Ansari, Parks and Recreation

11. “I don’t think it should be socially acceptable for people to say they are ‘bad with names.’ No one is bad with names. That is not a real thing. Not knowing people’s names isn’t a neurological condition; it’s a choice. You choose not to make learning people’s names a priority. It’s like saying, ‘Hey, a disclaimer about me: I’m rude.’” – Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project

12. “The best people to have power are the ones who don’t want it.” – Kit Harrington, Game of Thrones
13. “Taking responsibility for mistakes is more important than taking credit for good things.” – Emily Deschanel, Bones
14. “Be polite. Good manners have gotten me as far as anything else in this business.” – Nick Offerman, Parks and Recreation
15. “You have to keep reminding yourself it’s not about money, because there is a lot of money to be made in this business if you’re willing to do whatever. But that’s not what I’m thinking about.” – Zooey Deschanel, New Girl

16. “You will have bad times, but they will always wake you up to the stuff you weren’t paying attention to.” – Robin Williams, The Crazy Ones
17. “Sometimes things in life happen that allow us to understand our priorities very clearly. Ultimately you can see those as gifts.” – Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
18. “You don’t always win, but every time you lose, you get better.” – Ian Somerhalder, The Vampire Diaries

19. “I love being scared. I think you’re brave only when you do things that scare you. I’ve always used fear as a motivator. I’m not sure why.” – Ginnifer Goodwin, Once Upon A Time

20. “Doing something because it’s quote-unquote a good career move doesn’t really appeal to me. There’s never a surefire good career move except doing good work.” – Seth Green, Dads
21. “Of course, everybody makes mistakes, and we’ve all been young and stupid. But people need to have a sense of respect because hundreds of people are ready to take your place at any time. Maybe some people should think about that. Me, I’d prefer to have a good reputation rather than getting press for being scandalous, getting drunk in public, staying out late and so on.” – Sophia Bush, Chicago PD
22. ”I’m continually trying to make choices that put me against my own comfort zone. As long as you’re uncomfortable, it means you’re growing.” – Ashton Kutcher, Two and a Half Men
23. “I think the best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten is to trust myself and go for my dreams. I got that from my mom.” – Sarah Michelle Gellar, The Crazy Ones
24. ”I told myself a while back, ‘Love what you do, but don’t fall in love with what you do.’ That way you won’t be brokenhearted if ever it gets canceled five episodes in – which has happened to me.” – Nathan Fillion, Castle

25. “There are no mistakes, only opportunities.” – Tina Fey, 30 Rock (This isn’t on TV anymore, but it felt wrong to not include her!)
